EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing

This new EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training will provide fully funded PhD studentships and comprehensive training for postgraduate research students in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing has been designed to complement the aims of the world’s first Compound Semiconductor (CS) Cluster established in the UK. It has so far attracted over £500m in public and private funding and will provide a four-year PhD programme with fully funded EPSRC studentships.

This postgraduate research programme, led by Cardiff University and partnered by the University of Manchester, the University of Sheffield and University College London (UCL), builds on various Compound Semiconductor initiatives such as the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult and the EPSRC Future Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub led by Cardiff University.

The aim of these initiatives is to drive economic growth through partnership between industry and universities to apply the latest innovative research. The CDT has been co-created with IQE Plc, CSC Ltd, Newport Wafer Fab Ltd, and the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult and includes over 24 industrial partners.

The 4-year PhD Programme

We will provide specialist PhD training in this exciting and innovative field through a number of EPSRC fully funded PhD studentships. These studentships will provide full tuition fees and a living allowance for the duration of your four-year programme.

You will undertake a 4-year PhD programme, where the first year will be spent undertaking taught modules and developing your expertise in Compound Semiconductor technology at Cardiff University. You will be able to choose taught modules which are part of either an MSc programme in Compound Semiconductor Physics (focused on optoelectronic applications) or an MSc in Compound Semiconductor Electronics, whichever is more appropriate to your background or interests.

You will then progress to three years of a supervised PhD programme where you will undertake your own research. You can undertake your PhD research at Cardiff University, or with one of our partner universities at Manchester, Sheffield or UCL. All four universities have an outstanding track record in CS related research with a large, vibrant and diverse community of academics and researchers, and state-of-the-art facilities. All projects will also have an industry partner.
