Maneesh Kumar is a Professor of Service Operations & Program Director of Executive MBA at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University.

He conducts cross disciplinary applied research in the area of Operational Excellence including topics such as Quality Management, Lean Six Sigma (LSS), Lean, Green, and Innovation (iLEGO), Heathcare Process/Service Innovation using Big Data Analytics, Knowledge Clusters for capability enhancement within SMEs. This has resulted in publications of over 120 journals and conferences papers, edited books, and conference proceedings. His research participants encompasses range of industry including Automotive Industry (India, UK, Japan), Service Industries and Public Sector organizations including NHS. His current research interests are integration of Operations Excellence with Industry 4.0 and Big data environement, Operational Capabilities development in micro and small companies through cluster formation, sustaining operations excellence, Innovative Circular Economy Business Models.

He is an active member of ASQ and EUROMA. He is co-charing 21st Quality Management & Organisational Development Conference to be hosted in Cardiff University from 22nd-24th August, 2018. He has also initiated a first practice based forum on Lean Green and Innovation (iLEGO) that brings practitioner community together to have engaged discussion on synergies and misalignments between the three topics and promote cross learning between different industries. He has been involved in delivering LSS training up to Black Belt level and delivered several workshops on LSS application in different type and size of industries including Kwik-Fit Insurance Services, Standard Life, Admiral, Principality, Bakkavor Group, Norbert Dentressangle, Norgine Ltd., Celsa Steel, NHS Grampian, NHS Sheltand, Edinburgh City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) and Tata Motors. He is also a regular speaker at International Conferences and Seminars on LSS & Process Excellence.

Innovative methods used in EMBA Teaching

  • In 2017/18, Maneesh delivered Operations Management module in a local service company to facilitate experiential learning among students. This practice was recognised as innovative practice aligned with Public Value theme supported by Cardiff Business School.
  • Lean Thinking module was part delivered by GE Healthcare Lean expert during 2016/17, including company visit to learn practical application of Lean tools and techniques.

  • Philipp Reynders - 1st Year Doctoral student conducting enthographic study with Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe on the topic of 'Lean and Innovative Work Behaviour for building sustianaible CI organization'. This project is funded by ESRC DTP Type 2 Funding (50% ESRC; 50% Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe). Role: First Supervisor
  • Nadine Leder -  1st Year Doctoral student, funded by ESRC, working on the topic of 'Circular Economy Business Model Innovaiton'. This project is part of iLEGO research started by Maneesh. Role: First Supervisor
  • Harley Oliff - 2nd Year Doctoral student based in School of Engineering on the topic of 'Robotics and Human Co-operation and co-ordination for moving towards the goal of becoming leader in I4.0 applications'. This project is partly funded by Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe (50% funding). Role: Second Supervisor
  • Nouf Al Qurashi - Final Year Doctoral student, writing her thesis on the topic of sustianing Lean in the UK Higher Education Setting (especially the role of softer lean practices on embedding Lean in the HE setting). Role: First Supervisor
