Jianzhong Wu is a Professor of Multi-Vector Energy Systems and Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
He is Co-Director of INCOSE UK Energy Systems Interest Group, Co-Director of UK Energy Research Centre, Co-Director of Supergen Hub on Energy Networks, a member of Wales Smart Energy System Group, the Scottish Power Energy Networks Strategic Stakeholder Panel for England and Wales, and the Academic Promotions Committee of Cardiff University.
He joined Cardiff University in June 2008 (Lecturer 2008; Senior Lecturer 2013; Reader 2014; Professor 2015). From 2006 to 2008, he was a Research Fellow in the University of Manchester.
Prof. Wu researches on Smart Grid and energy infrastructure (modelling, analysis and optimisation of integrated smart energy supply networks). He has contributed to more than 50 EU, EPSRC and industry funded projects as a Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator. Particularly he was the deputy leader of the Multi-Energy Theme of EPSRC HubNet, Principal Investigator of projects on dynamic demand funded by National Grid, Toshiba and OPEN ENERGI, and the Cardiff Principal Investigator of an EU Horizon 2020 projects on “Peer to Peer Smart Energy Distribution Networks” and “MAGNITUDE”. He is a co-Principal Investigator of £24m WEFO funded FLEXIS project investing future energy systems and co-I of a £5m EPSRC project on Multi-Scale Infrastructure Systems Analytics. He was also involved in 3 EPSRC/NFSC Smart Grid projects and 1 UK-India Smart Grid project. He is a co-author of books “Smart Grid: Technology and Applications” (2012, Wiley) and “Smart Electricity Distribution Networks” (2017, CRC).
His professional involvements include: Member of the Council of China Electrotechnical Society; President of the UK Branch of China Electrotechnical Society; Co-Chair of the 9th International Conference on Applied Energy (2017); member of the Organizing Committees of International Conference on Applied Energy (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016); Vice-Chair of the Organizing Committee of 2012 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT Asia); and member of the Organizing Committee of 2010 45th International Universities' Power Engineering Conference (UPEC).
He is an Associate Editor of Applied Energy (Impact Factor: 8.426) and received the Applied Energy Outstanding Contribution Award in 2018 in redognition of his outstanding contributions to the journal as an Editor for several years. He is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IET Energy Systems Integration. He is the Director of Applied Energy UNiLAB on Synergies between Energy Networks (http://applied-energy.org/unilab/sen/home).
