Overview

Jianzhong Wu is a Professor of Multi-Vector Energy Systems and Head of School of Engineering, Cardiff University.

He is:

  • Co-Director of INCOSE UK Energy Systems Interest Group;
  • Co-Director of UK Energy Research Centre;
  • Associate-Director of Supergen Hub on Energy Networks;
  • a member of the Wales Smart Energy System Group;
  • a member of Northern Power Grid technical panel of ED2 business plan;
  • a member of the Scottish Power Energy Networks Strategic Stakeholder Panel for England and Wales; and
  • a member of the Academic Promotions Committee of Cardiff University.

He joined Cardiff University in June 2008 (Lecturer 2008; Senior Lecturer 2013; Reader 2014; Professor 2015). From 2006 to 2008, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Manchester.

Prof. Wu researches on Smart Grid and Multi-Vector Energy Systems (integrated energy infrastructure). He has contributed to more than 50 EU, EPSRC and industry funded projects as a Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator. He has published more than 240 peer-reviewed papers, including 1 ESI Hot Paper and7 ESI Highly Cited Papers(@Sep 2020). He is a co-author of books “Smart Grid: Technology and Applications” (2012, Wiley), “Smart Electricity Distribution Networks” (2017, CRC) and "The Future of Gas Networks" (2019, Springer).

His professional involvements include: President of the UK Branch of China Electrotechnical Society; Co-Chair of the 9th International Conference on Applied Energy (2017); member of the Organizing Committees of International Conference on Applied Energy (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016); Vice-Chair of the Organizing Committee of 2012 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT Asia); and member of the Organizing Committee of 2010 45th International Universities' Power Engineering Conference (UPEC).

He is an Associate Editor of Applied Energy (Impact Factor: 8.848), Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IET Energy Systems Integration, and Director of International UNiLAB on Synergies between Energy Networks. He is a Fellow of Energy Institute.

Teaching

Since joining Cardiff, Jianzhong Wu has taught at all levels from Year 1 undergraduate to MSc students, from the school-level module (EN1042 with around 360 students) in large teaching theatres, down to 1 to 1 supervision. He is/was the module leader for EN1065 Power Engineering, EN3708 Renewable Energy Technologies, EN3701 Power System Analysis, ENT778 Power System Analysis, ENT774 Research Study, EN4705/ENT739 Alternative Energy Systems and ENT759 Dissertation. The modules he taught also include EN1064 Network Analysis, EN1042 Computing I, EN1040 Electrical Tech., EN1072 Laboratory, EN2073 Lab. and Design, ENT778 Power System Analysis and ENT777/EN4708 Power System Protection.
