Dr Kim Smallman

Research Design and Conduct Service Consultant and Research Associate


I am a Consultant with the Research Design and Conduct Service South East Wales. This work involves providing support to staff from the NHS and Social Care to develop high quality research and grant applications.

As a Research Associate in qualitative methods, I am currently contributing to process evaluations for RAPID, TRIDENT, and Moving On

I have a background in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Youth and Community work, Adult Community Education and public engagement.

I am interested in qualitative methodologies, and in particular the applications of creative, visual and online approaches. I am also interested in the application of Virtual Reality within health care and medicine.







I have a background in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and have worked as a youth and community worker within south Wales.  I have expereince in community regeneration and adult community education and undertook a PhD examining male non-participation in community education.

My first academic post was with the University of Glamorgan as part of the Genomics Policy Unit. (2008 - 2014). Here I worked on a number of public engagement product and began developing an interest in the application of creative and visual methodologies in health research.


Let's talk about genes and I don't mean trousers 

I joined the Centre for Trials Research in 2014 as a Trial Manager and Research Associate and worked on ASSIST+Frank pilot and feasibility study. I then went on to join the RDCS South East Wales as a consultant and have continued to deliver qualitative work to a number of different studies.
