Multi-scale models for soft cellular solids
The aim of this project is to derive multi-scale models for cellular solids subject to finite elastic deformations, based on the architecture and the microscopic responses of the constituents, and demonstrate their numerical performance through comparisons with computer simulations of periodic structures under similar loads.
Bridging the microstructural responses of individual cells with the apparent macrostructural behaviour is a challenging modelling problem in materials science, as far as soft cellular structures with components exhibiting material nonlinear elasticity are concerned. To date, there is no established continuum model for this type of structure.
