Connections to Cardiff University that span generations

24 July 2026

Last week Media and Communications student Rhianna Bishop (BA 2026) graduated from the School of Journalism, Media and Culture.

Alongside this wonderful achievement, the occasion marked a special milestone for her family. Exactly 60 years ago, her grandparents, Niva and Peter Miles, graduated from Cardiff University in 1966.

Niva and Peter first met as students here, became engaged during their time at university, and both graduated with science degrees before going on to careers as science and biology teachers. Throughout their lives, they inspired generations of young people to recognise their potential and pursue their ambitions.

Six decades later, they returned to the university to celebrate their granddaughter's graduation, bringing three generations of the family together.

For Niva and Peter, the visit was a chance not only to share Rhianna's special day but also to revisit the place where their own journey began.

Congratulations Rhianna, as well as to Niva and Peter on reaching this wonderful 60-year milestone as Cardiff alumni.

Organising an alumni reunion is a wonderful way to reconnect with old friends.
