Taylor’s students receive warm Welsh welcome

First students from Taylor’s University, Malaysia, join the Welsh School of Architecture to complete their undergraduate degrees.
Building on its longstanding track record of welcoming students from Malaysia, the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) enrolled three new students this September, following a new undergraduate articulation agreement with Taylor’s University.
Andrew Campos, one of the new students, said: “Coming from the education system in Malaysia, there’s a sense of familiarity due to the course being structured by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM), the Board of Architects Malaysia, which is based on RIBA".
“However, the sense of freedom here is a like a breath of fresh air. In terms of the syllabus, we can pick which software to use and have a number of projects to choose from, rather than being assigned a particular site, which means we can work on something that resonates with and inspires us.”
The students have already completed the first two years of their architecture degrees in Malaysia and will study for a further two years at Cardiff University, joining the second year of the BSc Architectural Studies.
They plan to graduate from Cardiff University in 2027 with all module credits recognised by accrediting bodies in both the UK and Malaysia.
We were delighted to establish the articulation agreement with Taylor’s University, building on our long-standing partnership and commitment to working with leading international institutions.
The Welsh School of Architecture is proud to have already seen a number of Malaysian students graduate and continues to welcome students from Malaysia across all programmes, including the Master of Architecture (MArch) course.
MArch student Kimberly Yong, who was part of the welcome party, said: “I’ve truly enjoyed my undergraduate years at Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture and am thrilled to welcome new transfer students, as supportive tutors, creative design freedom, and great facilities continue to inspire my final MArch year toward becoming a qualified architect".
The School hopes that formalising the relationship through the articulation agreement, which was signed in 2024, will strengthen the bond between the universities, including exploring collaborations between Impact Laboratories in Kuala Lumpur and Research & Scholarship Groups in Cardiff.
As part of the work that led to this articulation agreement, I had the pleasure of visiting Taylor’s University and touring its design studios. It’s great to finally meet these students in Cardiff, and to hear their stories as well as first impressions of our studios – they say, the responsibility of design ‘freedom’ and learning to design for a winter climate
