Architecture alumnus recognised with international sustainability award

6 February 2024

Welsh School of Architecture alumnus Dr Hashem Taher (MSc 2017) was presented with the Science and Sustainability Award at the Study UK Alumni Awards Egypt.

The awards, organised by the British Council, shine a light on the impact of alumni from UK universities who are living outside the UK. The awards night in Egypt launched the tenth year of the Study UK Alumni Awards.

Dr Taher picked up the Science and Sustainability Award. This award recognises those alumni who are able to demonstrate a significant positive contribution in the world of science and sustainability, with a particular focus on areas like climate action, clean energy, medicine, sustainable cities and communities, engineering, industry and construction.

Dr Taher studied sustainable mega-buildings during his time at the Welsh School of Architecture. He went on to the University of East London to conduct PhD research that, through its focus on developing green corridors, can claim to have indirectly impacted 9.8 million Londoners, as well as having a positive impact for tens of thousands facing pollution and thermal stress.

TJ Rawlinson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, said:

Cardiff University is so proud of Dr Taher. From London to Cairo he has made a tremendous difference. What a champion for future generations! We’re so proud that Hashem has done so much with what he learned at the Welsh School of Architecture, and now, as the founder of the School of Creative Arts in Egypt, he is in a unique position to ensure that Cardiff’s values endure and are instilled in the next generation of leaders. Warm congratulations.
