Minister acknowledges Wolfson Centre's work

2 December 2020

National Assembly for Wales
National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Bay

Research from Cardiff University’s brand-new Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health highlights that 80% of problems with mental health begin when an individual is young.

The Wolfson Centre, a focused research centre with an interdisciplinary team from across healthcare, education and academic fields, will focus on reducing anxiety and depression in young people.

The newly opened centre’s vital research has already been highlighted by the Welsh Government’s Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Eluned Morgan, who while speaking in the Senedd reiterated the worrying high percentage of people’s whose mental health problems can begin when they are children or adolescents.

The Minister went on to say that the Welsh Government will be looking to prioritise early intervention and support when helping children and young people in Wales facing difficulties with their mental wellbeing.

The Wolfson Centre aims to develop and evaluate new interventions, improve the long-term mental health and wellbeing of the population and work collaboratively across sectors to impact on policy and practice that will improve how young people with lived mental health experience in Wales are supported.

We are encouraged to hear the Welsh Government and the Mental Health Minister already making reference to the work of the Wolfson Centre and the impact we hope our work will have on the lives of young people over the coming years.
