Data event

Cardiff University’s Data Innovation Research Institute is to host Wales’s first Festival of Data Innovation.

The event - on 3 May - is open to industrial partners, research students, academics and non-experts who are interested in data science, analytics and related disciplines.

The Festival will highlight how the Data Innovation Research Institute (DIRI) supports industry, research, teaching and engagement across the wider Cardiff City Region.

Directors of the Data Innovation Research Institute, Professors Paul Harper and Irena Spasić, commented: “Our festival is an opportunity for everyone interested in the field of data science to meet, learn from each other and understand how DIRI is developing real-world big data applications with a range of partners across commercial and public sectors to drive forward business productivity.”

Keynotes speakers include Rema Padman, Professor of Management Science and Healthcare Informatics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA; Peter Fullerton, Deputy Director, Planning and Resources at the Data Science Campus, Office for National Statistics, Newport, and Peter Madden OBE, Professor of Practice in City Futures at the School of Geography and Planning, Cardiff University.

Professor Radman’s talk will address ‘Data Driven Innovations and Knowledge Discovery in a Connected World; Peter Fullerton will discuss ‘Data Science for public good at ONS – what have we learned, where are we going?’ and Professor Madden will outline ways of ‘Understanding Cities in the Digital Age.’

Professor Harper added: “We are delighted to welcome an array of distinguished speakers with hands-on experience of tackling big data projects here in Wales and in America. It’s a great opportunity for businesses to get involved and hopefully partner with us in future to devise practical, real-world solutions to big data issues that affect the medical, biosciences, social sciences, physical sciences and engineering sectors.”

The Wales Festival of Data Innovation takes place in Cardiff University’s Main Building from 9am to 1pm on 3 May. The event will be followed by a networking lunch at 12.45.
