Turning pages, starting careers: our Creative Writing Industry Day

If you’re dreaming of becoming a published author or simply curious about the writing world, our Creative Writing Industry Day offers an invaluable opportunity to step inside the creative industries and discover what it really takes to build a career as a writer.

Organised annually, in collaboration with Creative Cardiff, this inspiring event is designed to connect students, alumni and aspiring writers with leading voices from the literary and publishing world.

Whether your ambition is to write for the page, stage or screen, we’ll help you take the next step on your creative journey.

Insight, advice and real-world experience

Held in the historic Glamorgan Building, the day includes a full programme of expert-led panels, practical sessions, and networking opportunities. From learning how to approach agents and publishers, to understanding how to get your work in front of audiences or secure funding for your next project, each session is shaped by real experience and delivered by professionals who understand the challenges—and rewards—of life as a writer.

You can expect speakers to include acclaimed authors, literary agents, publishers, festival organisers, and alumni who are now working successfully across the creative industries. Their advice is grounded in experience and offers a behind-the-scenes look at how books are brought to life, what makes a pitch stand out, and how writers can sustain creative careers beyond graduation.

Designed to support aspiring writers

A key feature of the Creative Writing Industry Day is its focus on helping students navigate the transition from student life to the professional world. Many of our Creative Writing graduates have gone on to publish poetry collections, novels and short stories, or build careers in areas such as spoken word, podcasting, live events, and literary editing. The event is designed to reflect this diversity, with sessions covering everything from portfolio careers to funding applications.

You'll also have the chance to grow your professional network, meet like-minded writers, and connect with organisations and individuals who are shaping the creative industries in Wales and beyond.

Part of a vibrant creative writing community

The Creative Writing Industry Day is just one of the many ways we support students interested in writing. As one of the UK’s first creative writing centres, we offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes taught by award-winning poets, novelists and playwrights. Our lecturers are not only experienced educators but active practitioners who bring their industry knowledge into the classroom.

By joining one of our creative writing programmes, you’ll become part of a supportive community of writers who are passionate about their craft—and committed to helping you develop yours.

Whether you're an aspiring author, a student exploring your options, or a member of the public with a love of literature, the Creative Writing Industry Day is your chance to explore the inner workings of a complex and ever-evolving industry—and find your place within it.

The Creative Writing Industry Day takes place each spring.
