Our PhD programmes can be undertaken full-time or part-time, with start dates in January, April, July and October. The exception is our PhD in Applied Linguistics (Lexical Studies), which is available only part-time and begins in October.

Postgraduate researchers become key members of a supportive and intellectually vibrant community. Our numerous reading groups, research seminars, workshops and conferences (many of them organised by postgraduate researchers) provide exciting platforms for showcasing new concepts, interrogating problems and trying out ideas.
Training the next generation of higher education teachers and researchers
We provide the supervisory expertise, intellectual support and the practical facilities to enable each student to flourish intellectually and work productively.
Postgraduate research students have a research budget that enables them to attend conferences and other academic and networking events. In addition, all postgraduate research students in the School have the opportunity to apply to teach first year undergraduate seminars in their subject section.
Successful applicants are automatically enrolled in our flagship Learning to Teach in Higher Education programme, which they complete alongside their PhD research.
Learning to Teach is a two-year, master’s-level module, which has been designed to support postgraduate tutors in developing their small-group teaching skills. This model scheme – one of the longest-established programmes of this type available in the UK for PhD students – is accredited at Associate Fellow level by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the leading professional body for higher education teaching and learning in the UK.
By successfully completing the module, our students fulfil the requirements to attain HEA Associate Fellowship status. HEA Associate Fellow status offers national and international recognition for an individual’s commitment to professionalism in the field of higher education teaching and learning, and is a significant asset in applying for academic posts.
