Our courses provide a research-led, holistic view of the Earth which the oceans, atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere are studied in depth as constituent components of the Earth's system.

We have 18 undergraduate degrees, which all start with a common first semester allowing you to sample the broad aspects of Earth and ocean science before making your choice.

Our four year MSci programmes are aimed at training students for a professional research career. MSci qualified Cardiff University students may be able to enter PhD programmes directly.

Dan Cox

I am working towards a PhD at the University of Birmingham, investigating the behaviour of sulphur and the chalcophile elements (e.g. Cu, Ag) within the Chilean Volcanic Arc. The extensive modules and background gained in geochemistry at Cardiff provided me with a solid stepping stone for this PhD, and the numerous field trips prepared me very well for a two-month long field season to Panama, Colombia and Chile. Through studying at Cardiff I was able to make excellent contacts in the world of geology who are now helping me with my PhD.
