Who were the Thracians? A Material Perspective on Ancient Ethnicity

‘Thracian’ is a Greek term: a label originally given by Greek authors to the northern Iron Age tribes that inhabited modern day Bulgaria and northern Greece. The term, however, is unable to accurately capture the complex material and social realities of this part of the Balkan Iron Age. It is therefore the purpose of this PhD to investigate that label and to determine its validity when applied to the material record. Was ‘Thracian’ ever an ethnic identity? Or was the name only useful as a Greek trope?
