International Chinese Language Teachers scholarships

Formerly known as Confucius Institute Headquarters Scholarships, these schemes support in-service Chinese language teachers or those aspiring to start a career in Chinese language teaching.

These scholarships offer the opportunity for successful candidates to delve deeper into Chinese culture, understand and learn the language at a higher level, and experience life in China.

The Center for Language Education and Cooperation enforces strict eligibility criteria for each of these scholarships and interested applicants should refer to the Center for Language Education and Cooperation to ensure they meet these before proceeding with an application.

The programme starts in September 2023 and provides scholarship for a maximum four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages or education-related majors. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6), 60 on the HSKK test (Advanced Level) and more than 2 years’ work experience in Chinese language teaching and related fields. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

The programme starts in September 2023 and provides a scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.

Applicants shall hold a bachelor’s degree and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

The programme starts in September 2023 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

The programme starts in September 2023 and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months. The choice of subjects is:

  • Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL): Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
  • Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
  • Chinese Language Study: Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

The programme starts in March 2024 and provides scholarship of a maximum of five months. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required. The choice of subjects is:

  • TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture.

The programme starts in December 2023 and provides a four-week scholarship.

An HSK test score is required. The programme may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with host institutions and such plan shall be submitted to the Center for Language Education and Cooperation for approval.

Topics studied include Chinese Study, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taiji Culture, Chinese Language plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, Special Four-week Program for Confucius Institutes.

These scholarships are for PhDs and Joint-PhDs in the academic areas of Humanities and Social Sciences:

  • PhD in China Fellowship: to support foreign students to pursue full-time PhD degrees in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Chinese universities. The duration of the program is generally 4 years.
  • Joint Research PhD Fellowship: to support doctoral students (candidates) registered with foreign universities to come to China for study, research and writing of their doctoral dissertations. The duration of the program ranges from 1 semester to 2 academic years.
