Confucius Institute scholarships

Scholarships are available from Hanban for undergraduate and master’s students.

These scholarships offer the opportunity for successful candidates to delve deeper into Chinese culture, understand and learn the language at a higher level, and experience life in China.

Please note: Hanban enforces strict eligibility criteria for each of these scholarships and interested applicants should refer to the Hanban website to ensure they meet these before proceeding with an application.

Four-week study

  • Option 1: Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi culture
    • Suitable for individual applicants, HSK transcript required
  • Option 2: Chinese Language plus home-stay experience with a Chinese family
    • Only available to groups of 10-15 students, organised and applied for by Cardiff Confucius Institute, individual HSK transcripts required
  • Option 3: Confucius Institute four-week study programme
    • Only available to groups of 10-15 students, organised and applied for by Cardiff Confucius Institute, individual HSK transcripts required

Admission dates: July or December 2018

One-semester study

  • Option 1: One-semester scholarship in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History or Chinese Philosophy
    • No experience studying in China (X1 or X2 visa) previously, HSK Level 3 (with test score over 210) and HSKK transcripts required, maximum scholarship duration is five months
  • Option 2: One-semester scholarship in Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi culture
    • No experience studying in China (X1 or X2 visa) previously, HSK transcript required, maximum scholarship duration is five months

Admission dates: September 2018 or March 2019

One-year study

  • Option 1: Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL)
    • No experience studying in China (X1 or X2 visa) previously, HSK Level 3 (with test score over 270) and HSKK transcripts required, maximum scholarship duration is 11 months
  • Option 2: Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, or Chinese Philosophy
    • No experience studying in China (X1 or X2 visa) previously, HSK Level 4 (with test score over 180) and HSKK (with test score over 60) transcripts required, maximum scholarship duration is 11 months
  • Option 3: Chinese Language Study
    • No experience studying in China (X1 or X2 visa) previously, HSK Level 3 (with test score over 180) transcript required, maximum scholarship duration is 11 months

Admission date: September 2018

Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

  • Applicants must have completed A levels
  • HSK Level 4 (with test score over 210)
  • HSKK Intermediate level (with test score over 60)
  • Maximum scholarship duration is 4 years

Admission date: September 2018

Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

  • HSK Level 5 (with test score over 210)
  • HSKK Intermediate level (with test score over 60)
  • Priority given to those applicants who can provide a notarized contract with a school to teach Chinese after graduation
  • Maximum scholarship duration is 2 years
