Themes and Approaches in Ancient History - 20 credits (HST002)

This module examines some of the theoretical concepts which have been influential in Ancient History in recent years, thinking about the ways in which we approach the study of the past, and some of the other ways we might do it; in the process students are encouraged to examine the assumptions they make as historians, and to identify the methods and topics which they choose, consciously or unconsciously, to privilege. The approaches discussed include gender and sexuality, class, culture change, literacy and orality, and conceptions of public and private.
