Research Interests

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the UK. It currently affects 12.7 million people in Europe and North America and is my primary research interest.

In its early stages, AMD compromises the functional integrity of the central retina and in particular the RPE / photoreceptor complex. It is for this reason that Dr Alison Binns and I have been developing electrophysiological techniques capable of probing the physiological status of the outer retina. This is exciting work because precise evaluation of functional status will not just aid prompt diagnosis but can act also as a catalyst for the development of therapeutic interventions.

Recently we have been working with Prof. John Robson to objectify the evaluation of the small signals which originate from the central retina in patients with early AMD. The mathematical techniques we have been using are relevant to all those using the electroretinogram (ERG) and may permit us to isolate the signals originating from photoreceptors, bipolar cells and the inner retina.

Despite recent advances, it seems that a 'cure' for AMD is still some way off and hence I also have a strong research interest in visual rehabilitation. Barbara Ryan and I were instrumental in the establishment of the Welsh Low Vision Service which now provides community based low vision services to over 4,000 adults in Wales every year. We are evaluating this model of low vision service provision, establishing its effectiveness and benchmarking it against the more traditional hospital based service with Dr Catey Bunce.

I also have research interests in the role of 'blue' light in the pathogenesis of AMD (with Prof. Mike Boulton, Prof. John Marshall and Prof, David Sliney), eye movements (with Dr Maggie Woodhouse, Dr Jon Erichsen and Dr Tom Freeman), and patient anxiety (with Dr Katy Greenland).
