About the service
Like it or not, Maths is everywhere and is an integral part of everything we see and do. An understanding of maths is also crucial to a wide range of degree disciplines. Apart from the obvious subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Engineering, many students are often surprised by how much mathematics and statistics is required while studying subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Optometry, Pharmacy, etc.
Some examples are:
- Understanding the radio-active decay of particles in Chemistry requires knowledge of logarithms.
- In Economics, price elasticity is often calculated using various differentiation techniques.
- All trainee Teachers must pass numeracy tests in order to qualify, regardless of their academic discipline.
The University recognises that, due to a variety of reasons, many students lack the confidence to cope with the mathematical requirement of their studies. This can lead to a great deal of anxiety, worry and possibly failure to complete their degree. As a result, the Maths Support Service is being developed to provide all Cardiff students with the opportunity to enhance the mathematical skills required to be successful in both their degree and also in their future employment.
