Research
Ancient History

Cardiff offers considerable research strength in ancient history and classical archaeology, with nine staff in the Ancient History section investigating the history and archaeology of Greece, Rome and their neighbours, and seven members of the Archaeology section working on the archaeology of Greece, Egypt, Roman Britain and the medieval Levant, including one lecturer who is a member of both sections. Our research also benefits from co-operation with the Cardiff School of Religious and Theological Studies through the Centre for Late Antique Religion and Culture, and the Departments of Classics and Ancient History in Swansea and Lampeter through the University of Wales Institute of Classics and Ancient History.
The Ancient History section's research interests focus on the social and economic history of the ancient world from Archaic Greece to late antiquity; themes which run through our work include warfare, issues of identity, especially ethnicity, and gender and sexuality, religion, domestic space, and the interpretation of epigraphic, visual and archaeological evidence.
