Masters Graduate School Career Fair

Postgraduate students and final year undergraduates were invited to a Masters Career Fair on 13th March 2013, hosted by the Masters Graduate School and held in the Glamorgan Building.

A number of employers from various sectors, including Savills, Redrow and the Welsh Assembly Government, delivered workshops on aspects of their recruitment processes. These employers were particularly effective because they had past students of the School who had developed successful careers with them.

Professor Rob Huggins chaired the event where workshops were followed by a question and answer session with employers on the panel. Joanna Gibson from Cardiff Career Service also delivered a talk on 'The Career Service: Strategies and Beyond' where she highlighted the facilities and support available to students. The Fair ended with an opportunity for students to network with employers and staff.

Grant Strong, Project Manager with Redrow was amongst the employers who delivered a workshop. Grant, a graduate of the School, said "I wanted to offer advice in this competitive employment market and keep my workshop as genuine as possible as I’ve been in the same situation as the students. I was fortunate enough to secure employment with Redrow so anything I can give back to CPLAN is great".

James Hooker, Senior Planning Manager with the Welsh Assembly Government and a Cardiff School of Planning and Geography graduate, said "We (WAG) are going through our graduate scheme application and interviewing process at present and its very interesting being on the other side of the table. It’s been beneficial to give students pointers which will hopefully secure them employment in the near future".

Michelle Alexis, the School's Student Support Manager, who organised the event said "Many students have commented that they found today particularly useful because of the advice from different sectors. It’s very important to hold this type of event to assist students with their next steps which is usually employment or further study. The employers who delivered workshops are connected to our School which give real examples of career success which is motivational for students".
