5. Surfing Places
The final strand of research expertise is in the area of ‘Surfing Places’. This interest combines the methodological, cultural, and geographical interests outlined above, as well as my concern with rural areas of Britain and their development. This work has resulted in generating external funding from the Sports Council of Wales (SCW, £9,463) to investigate the participation regimes and motivations for surfing in Wales, and producing user-group reports for both SCW and Welsh Assembly Government which have informed sports and leisure policy in this area . Connecting these participation regimes to geographical theory has led to papers being submitted on the nature of the surfed wave .
