Why did you choose Cardiff University as a place to study?

The university has a well regarded planning course and being a resident of Cardiff it was an affordable option.

What was the best thing about your time as a student at Cardiff?

The opportunity to study at home whilst meeting a great group of likeminded individuals. The school also offered a field trip to Germany which was really enjoyable.

What thing or person inspired you most whilst you were a Cardiff University student?

There is a wealth of knowledge and experience at the school and the time I spent there confirmed my choice of career and inspired my continued education into broader areas of the planning profession.

What one thing would you tell someone else about the School of Planning and Geography at Cardiff?

Cardiff is an exciting place to study and live. The degree enabled me to gain those broad skills required by a RTPI accredited course. The staff were very friendly and approachable.

How did your degree most help you in the career or job you have now chosen?

The degree gave me a broad understanding of planning enabling me to keep my options open when applying for a job. The variety of education techniques e.g. presentations, GIS, report writing prepared me for the wide variety of skills required by a planner.

Tell us a bit about your current job, how you got into what you are doing and what you enjoy about it most.

I gained employment at Newport City Council as a Planning Policy Officer in 2005 and have gained a wide variety of experience within planning policy. My main responsibilities within the Council involve housing, flooding, minerals and environmental issues on the Local Development Plan.

What opportunities do you feel have opened up to you as a result of being a student at the Cardiff School of Planning and Geography?

Whilst undertaking the course my tutor organised a week’s work experience in the conservation section of Cardiff City Council. This enabled me to gain an insight into an area of particular interest.

Tell us any interesting facts about yourself, hobbies or interests that you have.

I have particular interest in the historic environment and have recently completed a postgraduate course in Conservation of the Built Environment at the College of Estate Management, Reading.
