BBSRC South-West Biosciences Doctoral Landscape Award

The BBSRC-funded SWBio DTP involves a partnership of world-renown universities, research institutes and industry, based mainly across the South West and Wales.

About the SWBio DLA

Our BBSRC DLA offers fully-funded PhD studentships in a variety of projects, across our Academic Schools and interdisciplinary Research Institutes. Students will benefit from an excellent local research environment as well as a comprehensive programme of research and professional skills development.

Now delivered through the new Doctoral Landscape (DLA) format, this BBSRC-funded initiative offers structured PhD studentships in the biosciences. It brings together universities, research organisations, and industry to support cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary training, and career development.
Students follow a flexible programme combining supervisor-led projects, cohort-based training, and early hands-on research, preparing them to tackle global challenges in the biosciences.

Cohort period

The DLA was awarded funding for four intakes of students. The first cohort started in October 2025 and the final cohort will commence in 2029/30. Please see the links below for current project listings, recruitment timelines and funding details.
