Bute Energy Bursary
The School of Geography and Planning has partnered with Bute Energy to offer generous bursaries to two students studying Spatial Planning and Development (MSc) in 2025/26.
Bute Energy is a Welsh-based company developing onshore wind and solar energy parks to generate clean, renewable energy.
Open to Welsh-domiciled students pursuing a career in planning or the renewable energy sector in Wales, the bursary supports those committed to achieving Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
Available for full-time or part-time study, this opportunity is ideal for passionate individuals eager to contribute to the future of planning in Wales.
How to apply
Spatial Planning and Development (MSc) offer-holders who are interested and eligible for the bursary will need to submit an application by 9:00 Monday 2 June 2025 in order to be screened and shortlisted.
Eligibility
- Applicants must meet the specific course entry criteria for their course and have been offered and accepted (conditional or unconditional) a place on the course in the year for which they are applying
- Eligible students can undertake the programme on a full-time or part-time basis. Year 1 enrolment must have started 2025/26
- Students are only eligible if their tuition fees are not being paid by their employer
- Eligible students must be Welsh domicile (lived continuously in Wales for at least 3 years
- Including time spent in higher education) classed as a Home student for the purposes of tuition fees and intend to pursue a career in Wales
- Eligible students must intend to progress to Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and pursue a career in the field of planning
- Commit to discussing their experiences on the programme and the ways that the scholarship supported them to pursue their career in planning for the purposes of promoting the bursary
- Show a keen interest and if possible, demonstrate intent to pursue a career in planning or the Renewable energy sector in Wales
- Submit an application by the deadline noted on this website.
Application process
- Applicants will be short-listed by a School panel based on their application
- Short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview by a panel comprised of staff from the School and Bute Energy
- Decisions on the award of the scholarship will be made by the panel
- Decisions will be based on the eligibility criteria and interview. The panel’s decision is final and the panel shall not be obliged to provide reasons for their decisions
- Successful applicants will be notified by email, including details of when payments will be made
- Successful applicants must agree to these Terms and Conditions before any payments are made.

Bute Energy Bursary operational terms and conditions
- Bursaries will be awarded to successful students, subject to the availability of the limited awards
- The bursary will be paid directly towards the student tuition fees charged by Cardiff University
- Bursary payments will not be made in repeat years. If any tuition fee payments have already made by students these will be refunded directly to their bank account. The finance team will liaise with the students about this transaction
- Cardiff University will inform successful applicants of how and when these payments will be made at the earliest available opportunity
- Students awarded the bursary must have completed their registration onto year 1 of their course to receive the bursary. Successful applicants will be required to fully register onto each year of their course (if part time) to remain eligible for the scholarship. This entails completing the online registration form and providing original evidence of their personal identity in accordance with University regulations, and paying the residual balance of any fees
- Students who withdraw from their studies before receiving full payment of the award will become ineligible for the bursary and any additional payments will be terminated. No extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration
- Students who transfer to an ineligible course before receiving full payment of the award will become ineligible for the bursary
- Applicants who receive the bursary will still be entitled to apply for student loans, scholarships and other bursaries, subject to their eligibility
- The University’s decision on the allocation of the bursary in accordance with these terms and conditions is final. There is no appeal process.
