Minor Injuries at the Front Door

A bespoke course designed to upskill emergency physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of minor injuries in the Emergency Department.

This course has been developed to address the teaching and training needs in minor injuries and takes advantage of:

  • high-fidelity simulation facilities (at Cardiff University’s Emergency Medicine Academic Centre (EMAC))
  • small group teaching
  • highly skilled and experienced consultant faculty (with years of experience of working in both Emergency Departments and the pre-hospital environment).

Who it’s for

This course is primarily designed for all emergency physicians and allied healthcare professionals practising both in the emergency department and minor injuries units.

Content is appropriate for physicians working in Wales, the UK and internationally.

What you’ll learn

Course content has been created in alignment with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) curriculum and UK contemporary practice.

Delegates will learn about assessing and managing wounds and burns, examining upper and lower limbs, managing common limb fractures, plastering, haematoma and ring blocks, VTE prophylaxis, and ENT injuries.

Delegates will have the opportunity to practice these in a simulated setting during the face-to-face day. On completion of this clinical CPD course, delegates should be able to:

  • understand basic wound anatomy and how to assess wounds
  • understand wound healing by primary and secondary intention
  • perform wound closure using glue, steri-strips and sutures
  • recognise tertiary referral criteria for burns and wounds
  • identify common limb injuries from clinical examination and X-ray imaging
  • recall special tests used when examining limbs
  • recognise when a joint/fracture requires manipulation prior to the application of plaster of Paris
  • perform haematoma and digital ring blocks
  • understand when VTE prophylaxis is required for lower limb injuries
  • understand how to examine ENT in relation to trauma
  • manage and remove foreign bodies in the eyes, nose and ears

Topics covered

Pre-course learning (3 hours)

eLearning modules consist of video lectures and demonstrations, up-to-date reading recommendations and optional formative questions to test knowledge.

All course material will be provided for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after the face-to-face course.

Face-to-face course (7 hours)

The face to face component is where delegates will be working in small groups to develop their skills with guidance from high performing emergency physicians through simulation and extensive debrief and discussion.

Post-course 'open book' eAssessment (1 hour)

The post-course eAssessment will open following the face-to-face component. It can be sat in an open-book asynchronous fashion within 6 weeks of the end of the face-to-face course.
