This course is primarily designed for emergency physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists (at resident doctor and consultant levels) who attend trauma calls within their emergency department (in both Major Trauma Centres and Major Trauma Units). Content is appropriate for physicians and surgeons working in the UK and internationally.
What you’ll learn
Course content has been created in alignment with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) curriculum. Delegates will learn five HALO procedures and have the opportunity to practice these procedures in a simulated setting. On completion of this clinical CPD course delegates should be able to:
- recognise the indications and contraindications to each of the five HALO procedures
- appreciate the decision making and human factors for performing the HALO procedures
- perform a needle and surgical cricothyroidotomy
- manage a maternal cardiac arrest or peri-arrest with a resuscitative hysterotomy within 4 minutes of maternal death
- perform a resuscitative thoracotomy
- manage significant facial trauma/haemorrhage with facial packing
- perform a lateral canthotomy in orbital compartment syndrome
- use the ‘zero-point survey’ to optimise patient care and team coordination.
Topics covered
Pre-course learning (4 hours)
