Who it’s for

Full dental team.

What you’ll learn

  • to highlight the benefit of using an objective measure to assess orthodontic treatment need.
  • to be aware of the systematic approach (grading and procedures) to record both components of IOTN, Aesthetic (AC) and Dental Health (DHC).
  • to develop competence in using the IOTN.
  • to be able to record the IOTN accurately.
  • to understand the concept of prioritizing orthodontic treatment need.
  • to be able to correctly identify and classify treatment need in terms of deviant occlusal trait and grade.
  • to be calibrated in the use of both components of the IOTN. To reach an acceptable level of variation in scoring both components of the index compared to the gold standard (chance corrected measure of agreement greater than the lower 95% confidence limit of 0.6 Kappa, with no systematic bias).
  • to highlight the benefits and drawbacks of the index.

This training day is intended to train health care professionals in the use of the IOTN in respect to assessing orthodontic treatment need and assessing orthodontic treatment outcomes.

Topics covered

  • the aesthetic component of the IOTN.
  • the dental health component of the IOTN.
  • current thresholds for orthodontic treatment within the NHS.

Benefits

  • to be consistent with minimal variation (meeting standardised statistical thresholds lower 95% kappa of >0.6 when assessing 30 International “Gold Standard Cases”) in recording the AC component of IOTN.
  • to be consistent with minimal variation (meeting standardised statistical thresholds lower 95% kappa of >0.6 when assessing 30 International “Gold Standard Cases”) in recording the DHC component of IOTN.

Teaching and Useful Information

Course materials (course book and video materials) will be sent 2 weeks before the course. You will be required to watch 3 videos in relation to how to score AC and DHC components of IOTN as well as score 40 intra-oral images in respect to the AC of IOTN . This part of the course is undertaken at home or in your workplace and one hour of CPD will be designated for this.

The AC scores will be assessed for variation and scoring patterns prior to the course.

Small group teaching will be undertaken on the day of the course in groups of 10.  The participants will score batched of 10 cases in respect to IOTN.  Course tutors will rotate after each batch, so participants will experience 40 diverse malocclusions.
