Overview

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist working on the Skills for Adolescent Wellbeing (SWELL) Study. I have been responsible for adapting the Manualised CBT intervention used with young people in the SWELL Study and training and supervising psychological therapists to deliver the intervention.

I am passionate about reducing risk of mental health difficulties and improving mental wellbeing in young people and helping clarify which approaches (and their components) are most effective for which combinations of risk factors and mental health presentation.

Biography

I completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology and later a MSc in Psychological Research Methods at the University of Exeter. My PhD, exploring emotional processing and risk factors for anti-social behaviour in young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties, was completed under the supervision of  Professor Stephanie van Goozen at Cardiff University.

Following my PhD, I trained as a Clinical Psychologist and Cognitive Behavioural Therpaist (accreditted by the BABCP), completing my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath. My research during this programme included exploring the use of a virtual reality intervention to reduce risk of parental maltreatment, and factors which predict naturalistic recovery from PTSD.

Following qualification, I worked concurrently for three years on a multi-centre randomised control trial exploring the use of Acceptance and Committment Therapy (ACT) in young people who had experienced a brain tumour, and in an inpatient forensic hospital working with individuals with complex mental health difficulties.

I currently divide my time working three days a week at the Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health working on the Skills for Adolescent Wellbeing (SWELL) Study, a randomised controlled trial exploring the effectiveness of a preventative group CBT intervention for adolescents at risk of depression, and two days a week working on the South Wales Doctorate in Clinical Psychology as a research tutor.
