Overview
I am a Welsh speaking registered mental health nurse, researcher and educator.
I am passionate about mental health and have dedicated my career to both teaching and research in this field. My clinical practice was predominantly in the area of rehabilitation following psychosis and much of my research interest stems from this area.
I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing with the School of Healthcare Sciences, and contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision. I consider myself a well-rounded academic with a track record in both research and teaching.
RESEARCH
I am an experienced mental health researcher having worked within the academic/research setting since completing my Psychology PhD in 2002. I have developed strong research leadership and management skills, having contributed to, and led evidence synthesis and health technology assessments in mental health. I have a wide range of research interest in mental health; specifically, I focus my research around health inequalities, psychotropic medication; determinants of health; and health psychology; and mental health promotion for people with severe and enduring mental illness. I have previoulsy been a Chair of medical and health research ethics committee. I regularly review grant applications and journal manuscripts.
TEACHING
During my career, I have undertaken several roles including Admissions Tutor, Mentor, External Examiner, and Programme Lead for Mental Health Nursing (part time and full time) and Learning Disability Nursing.
LEADERSHIP
Having prevoulsy lead a team of 15 teaching staff, I am comfortable supporting staff in a pastoral role and have mentored and supported staff in a variety of roles. I am an experienced post graduate supervisor with several PhD and Master’s students currently active. I have also mentored teaching and research staff in developing their roles as postgraduate supervisors. I have taken a variety of wider leadership roles such as being a programme lead, representiing acadcmic staff as member of a university Senate and chairing university academic integrity panels.

Research
I am an experienced mental health researcher. My experience includes leading, managing, and conducting clinical research and securing research funding in this area.
My areas of research interest focus on those with mental illness achieving optimum physical and mental health, and social functioning. I have been an investigator on numerous studies from clinical trials to qualitative ethnographic work with experience of a range of difference research methodologies.
I have also been reviewing paper for academic journals and grant applications for over 20 years. I have also published over 20 papers in academic journals and presented at national and international conferences across my career. I also previously Chaired a Medical and Health Research Ethics committee.
I am currently an investigator on several projects, including a study to develop a scale to measure the psychological and wellbeing benefits of experiencing nature, an evaluation of the ICAN work, and a study exploring issues relating to suicide and self-harm in rural communities.
Teaching
Following a career in mental health nursing practice and research, I came into teaching in 2014. In this capacity, I have undertaken roles including personal tutor, practice learning link tutor, admissions tutor and programme lead. I have contributed to curriculum development and validation of mental health nursing programmes. I am also an external examiner.
I am an experienced post graduate supervisor and currently supervise PhD, Prof Doc, and MSc students.
Biography
Following my education as a mental health nurse, I studied Psychology to PhD (2002) and later studied for a MSc. Public Health and Health Promotion at Bangor University. More recently (2015), I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
I have dedicated my career, which spans almost 30 years, to mental health, having worked in clinical practice, research and teaching contexts to make a difference in this field. I continue to research the topic of mental health and teach mental health nursing.
