Learning Designer

Overview

Role responsibilities

As a Learning Designer in the Digital Education team, I focus on helping academics and professional staff use technology to improve teaching and learning across the university. I develop and lead workshops that combine pedagogy with practicality and deliver on the 'Introduction to Teaching' and Higher Education Authority Fellowship courses.

As a School Partner for the ESRC Welsh Graduate School of Social Sciences I am leading on their community initiative for students seeking to reduce the feeling of loneliness amongst their PhD students. This has developed from initially being on Teams into a structured Buddy Scheme that has brought students together based on their Pathway, their Institute and EDI requirements.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach on the iBsc and Msc Medical Education courses. Supporting the review, development and delivery of the Learning Environments and Education Media and Technology modules.

Key work/Specialties

Co-designing 'Cardiff Universities - Community of Inquiry Toolkit' with Dr Hannah Shaw

The toolkit is based on Garrison's Community of Inquiry Framework that splits a learning community into three segments (presences): Teaching Presence; Cognitive Presence; and Social Presence.

We have worked in partnership with staff and students from across the university to develop a tool for use by students and staff to analyse their learning communities and receive practical guidance on how to improve each element. The pilot has been well received and we are looking for opportunities to roll the toolkit out across the university.

Biography

Twelve years' teaching experience in secondary, further and higher education. I started teaching in secondary education teaching Business Studies, ICT and and Maths to A level and meeting targets of 75%+ of students achieving A* - B.

When I taught Adults in the Community, I developed and delivered accredited and unaccredited courses on IT, Business Start-up, Personal Finance and Maths skills.

In further education, I lectured on Accounting and Finance across a range of accreditations to Level 5 and was a course leader. During this time I gained Chartered Teacher Status (CTeach), Advanced Teacher Status (ATS) and became a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training (FSET).

Since joining Cardiff University in 2021 I have enjoyed working with lecturers and professional staff to review and develop teaching methods; support module redesign; teach on the iBsc and Msc in Medical Education and much more.
