Rachael Jolley

Overview

As well as being a lecturer on the MA journalism programme, Rachael Jolley is an award-winning magazine editor and journalist. Rachael’s work has brought international acclaim including the British Society of Magazine Editors’ specialist editor of the year, Telegraph young science writer of the year, merit award, and the Grand Apex award 2017 as well as awards for travel journalism.

She was the editor-in-chief of the award-winning magazine Index on Censorship for seven years, where she commissioned writers including Amartya Sen, Margaret Atwood, Ian Rankin and Ngugi wa Thiong’o as well as well as running a desk of contributing editors based around the world.  Her work in journalism has mainly been across international politics, travel, media freedom and business. Other roles have included managing editor of Business Traveller magazine,  contributing editor at Wanderlust, and features editor at ITV Teletext. She has worked for New Scientist, The Times, The Guardian, the Irish Times, Evening Standard and the New Statesman.

Her career began as a news reporter and she has worked on daily titles reporting on crime, consumer affairs and international news, including on The Times, Eastern Daily Press and Evening Standard. She also has worked as a freelance for radio and TV including shifts on BBC Breakfast and as a regular guest on Monocle Radio. She also hosted a radio show for three years. One of her passions is podcasting, and she began podcasting before it was fashionable. She has served as a board member on Pod Academy, the podcasting and education charity.

She has been a guest lecturer at the Reuters Institute at Oxford University, Sheffield University, City University and LJMU.

Rachael was a board member of the US Press Freedom Tracker and podcasting charity Pod Academy, and has been a judge for the Rory Peck and the British Society of Magazine Editors  journalism awards.

She is currently a research fellow at the Centre for Freedom of the Media at Sheffield University. She is a contributing editor at European publication Eurozine, contributing editor at Index on Censorship magazine and international affairs editor at The Conversation. She is also co-author of the play Murdering the Truth.
