Overview
I am a Reader in French Studies at the School of Modern Languages; I teach across the full range of the French undergraduate programmes (year 1, year 2, and final year), and coordinate the French Language Advanced module, as well as a School-wide module on the pedagogy of modern foreign languages.
I am currently the School’s Academic Lead for Careers and Employability and also the School’s Exchange and Erasmus Programmes coordinator (incoming students).
As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I am a committed member of the teaching and learning scholarly community and I carry out research on intercultural projects and critical pedagogy.
I also co-organise the GW4-Lang colloquium, an annual conference on language teaching innovation in Higher Education encouraging cross-language collaboration amongst language practitioners from the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. We offer strategic direction and identify innovation potentials in contemporary language education within the context of local, national and international trends and requirements.
Research
As an expert in my field, I regularly present on the pedagogy of my discipline at conferences.
My publications include papers on French singers and poets Henri Salvador and Claude Nougaro and forthcoming publications on the cinema of Marguerite Duras and Marcel Pagnol.

Teaching
I teach the pedagogy of modern foreign languages to Erasmus students on their year abroad here in Cardiff. This gives them theoretical and empirical training, strengthening their employability through the development of key transferable skills.
My teaching of translation is informed by my professional experience in this field. I have translated on a freelance basis for private companies and charities, providing French translations for websites, official documents, book sections and music CD sleeves.
My experience also includes teaching Business French, for companies throughout South Wales and for a Business French school module led by Prof. Cummings, including preparing students for the prestigious Paris Chamber of Commerce exams.
Biography
I completed my undergraduate studies at Paris III-Sorbonne nouvelle, gaining a First-Class degree (Mention Très Bien) in English with Spanish in 1990. My degree in Modern Foreign Languages provided me with my first taste of teaching languages during a year as a French assistant in a secondary school and a Sixth Form college in Plymouth, an experience which was to confirm my calling to a teaching career. I subsequently studied at Sussex University and Paris III and was awarded an MA in 1991 (Mention Très Bien), which was followed in 1992 by a DEA (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) also with Distinction. I became Agrégée d’anglais in 1993. After a year teaching MFL in a secondary school in Paris, I joined Cardiff University in September 1994.

July 2017: awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
January 2016 to present: Co-Director of the GW4 annual Conference in innovation in language education (LanGW4).
October 2012-October 2016: External examiner for French in Polylang, the Open Language Programme of the University of Westminster
September 2012: Higher Education representative in the WJEC consultation on the future of French A-levels.
Honours and awards
January 2011: LLAS (Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies): £1,000 to fund research into the NSS (National Student Survey)
