Dr Siriol McAvoy

Tutor in Media, Journalism and Culture

Originally from Aberystwyth in west Wales, Siriol has been studying and working in Cardiff as a teacher in Higher Education for the past eight years. She completed her BA in English and French at Nottingham University in 2007, before moving to Oxford University for a Masters in Medieval Literature.

A sense of hiraeth called her back to Wales, so she returned to complete a PhD thesis at Cardiff University, which focused on modernism, gender, and experimental Welsh poetry in English. Siriol has worked in a number of educational institutions in the UK and France, and has taught a wide range of topics at Cardiff University, where she worked as a Postgraduate Tutor (2010-16) and later postdoctoral University Teacher in English Literature (2017). Her research interests include twentieth-century poetry, women’s writing, place and the environment, historical re-visions, and cultural identity.

Siriol has published book reviews and research on Argentine-Welsh poet Lynette Roberts, and has recently edited a book of essays that consider questions of marginality and environment in Welsh modernism, calledLocating Lynette Roberts: Always Observant and Slightly Obscure. Future projects include a book on Lynette Roberts, Virginia Woolf and the medieval past, and an investigation of modernist women writers’ use of synaesthesia as a form of memory-work.

I am currently tutor on the module The Media and Me: Gender, Sexuality, and Identity, as part of the Pathway to Media.
