Overview

I am a PhD student researching methods for translating culturally specific terms, specifically from Chinese into Welsh.

I am based in the School of Modern Languages, with supervision from the School of Welsh.

I have an undergraduate degree in Chinese from Oxford University with a year abroad in Peking University and an MSt in Translation Studies from Cardiff.

Research

My thesis aims to explore methods for translating non-equivalent terms for the first time in language combinations that have not had much prior translation, in this case from Chinese to Welsh. It uses words from three Chinese language case studies which come from different genres and historical periods. My research will consider how to make the decision between borrowing and forming words, and then how to translate or form new words for words identified in the case studies.
