Cardiff University and Center for Field Sciences Deliver Isotope Analysis Training for Professionals

12 January 2026

Field Sciences

Cardiff University’s BioArchaeology team recently partnered with the Center for Field Sciences (CFS) to deliver an intensive Introduction to Isotope Analysis short course.

This continuing professional development programme provided participants with advanced training in isotope techniques, which are essential for reconstructing past diets, migration patterns, and ecological systems.

The course attracted professionals from archaeology, heritage science, and environmental studies, offering a unique blend of theory and practice. Learners engaged in hands-on laboratory work, sample preparation, and data interpretation exercises, supported by Cardiff’s state-of-the-art facilities.

Hands-on laboratory work

Professor Richard Madgwick, Professor of Archaeological Science at Cardiff University’s School of History, led the teaching of the course, bringing his internationally recognised expertise in isotope analysis to the classroom.

His sessions focused on applying isotopic methods to real-world archaeological questions, ensuring participants gained both conceptual understanding and practical competence.

This partnership allowed us to combine Cardiff’s academic strengths with CFS’s global network of field practitioners. Our aim was to provide learners with robust, research-driven skills that they can immediately apply in their work. Seeing participants gain confidence in both the theory and practice of isotope analysis was incredibly rewarding
Dr Emily Holt, Cardiff’s lead for the overall project reflected on the success of the collaboration

Course objectives included:

  • Introducing the principles and methodologies of isotope analysis.
  • Demonstrating its applications in archaeology and related disciplines.
  • Providing practical experience in sample preparation and data interpretation.
  • Equipping professionals with tools to integrate isotope techniques into their research projects.

Feedback from participants highlighted the value of combining rigorous academic instruction with real-world applicability, making this course a standout in Cardiff’s professional development portfolio.
