Cardiff Business School has sponsored this year’s DellEMC Management Challenge event held at Christ College in Breconshire.

In its fourth year, the unique four-dimensional competitive event combines a two day adventure race, with management development activities, networking opportunities and forums to deliver improvements to its charity partner, The Prince’s Trust.

“An intellectual challenge”

This year’s event, themed #Collaboration, saw 30 competing teams from leading Global and UK corporates tackle a ‘live’ management task set by Robert Morgan, Sir Julian Hodge Professor of Marketing & Strategy at Cardiff Business School.

Professor Morgan said: “The case exercise was designed to complement the physical trials over the weekend with an intellectual challenge.”

Under time, resource and competitive pressure, teams were asked to develop initiatives and interventions for The Prince’s Trust to address opportunities for underemployed young people.

“By moving out of their comfort zones and using their experience and collaborative efforts the teams delivered case solutions which, if implemented by the Prince’s Trust, could become reality benefiting young people across the UK.”

“Robert really made us all think differently about #collaboration. Collaboration is generally viewed in a positive light, but he rightly pointed out there can be negative consequences and collaboration should be used skillfully and contextually for maximum impact.”

Claire Vyvyan Senior Vice President of Dell EMC UK & Ireland Commercial Business

“A superb and thought-provoking insight, extremely well articulated. I personally took a lot from it,” Ms Vyvyan added.

In preparation for their challenge the teams enjoyed a motivational keynote speech from Chrissie Wellington OBE, a 4 time World Champion of Ironman Triathlon, World record holder, Charity worker and Campaigner.

The event was also an opportunity for the School to showcase its Executive Education provision. Attendees were introduced to the team’s training portfolio which translates world-leading academic research in to relevant, operational and impactful business practice for individuals and organisations.

The DellEMC Management Challenge was founded by Hywel Loveluck who studied at Cardiff Business School and now sits on the International Advisory Board.
