Prime Minister Theresa May held a reception at Downing Street to mark the 50th anniversary of homeless charity Crisis on Wednesday 6 September 2017.

The reception recognised Crisis’ important and pioneering work in tackling homelessness, and its achievements in helping tens of thousands of people get off the streets. It was attended by a diverse audience of stakeholders including homeless people, academic researchers, thought leaders, support service providers and policymakers.

Dr Peter Mackie, Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Geography and Planning, attended the reception as a leading academic voice in the field of housing and homelessness.

The Prime Minister and Crisis used the event to present plans to end homelessness in the UK with the support and involvement of stakeholders from the private and public sectors. Dr Mackie has been commissioned to lead an international evidence review on ‘what works’ in addressing rough sleeping. This review will inform the Crisis plan.

The School of Geography and Planning is home to world-leading research which has significant impact in shaping relevant policy debates and influencing international agendas. One of the School’s research specialisms is housing and homelessness, a topic explored by the Social and Cultural Geography Research Group, one of the largest groups of social and cultural geographers in the UK.
