Big data research published in leading journal

23 August 2017

Research from Cardiff Business School’s Professor Luigi M. De Luca on big data and innovation has been published in the world-leading Journal of Product Innovation Management.

The article, titled Linking Data-Rich Environments with Service Innovation in Incumbent Firms: A Conceptual Framework and Research Propositions, was published in a special thematic edition of the journal concerned with Innovation in Data-Rich Environments. It was edited by Professors Charles Noble and Neeraj Bhararadwaj of the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

In their editorial introduction, the guest editors referenced Professor De Luca’s article, describing it as “thought-provoking” as to how it highlights the “complex challenges associated with an organizations’s attempts to master big data, and sets the stage for future empirical research”.

In the study, Professor De Luca and his co-authors investigated the primary factors that enable existing service organisations to capture the innovation potential of big data, and present a roadmap for service managers who need to align the service innovation process of their organisations with the opportunities offered by big data. The study was also recipient of the runner-up best paper award from the prestigious Marketing Science Institute (MSI), which sponsored the special issue.

Professor De Luca commented: “I am delighted by the recognition my work has received, both its publication in a leading journal and the award from the MSI. This is the first outstanding output from my research programme on big data and decision-making, and I am indebted to the many managers and directors who I interviewed for this project.

“I will now look to develop this area of research further and my new projects will delve deeper to address questions about how big data investments generate superior returns, and what are the social implications and public value of big data applications.”
