Community Gateway, Grangetown Community Action and local residents launched the first Grangetown World Market on Saturday 22nd July, funded by Cardiff University’s City Region Exchange.

Seventeen different stalls were featured at the event including nine Grangetown businesses and two enterprises run by University staff or students. More than 200 residents visited the market despite the weather and picked up fantastic treats including handmade macaroons from Lolo’s Cake Away, all new Grangetown tote bags and stunning crafts and clothing. Those who ventured out during the sunny spells caught some sun whilst indulging in Grangetown’ s finest Ffwrnes Pizza or a BBQ from Spicer’s Meat Wagon. Grangetown favourites were also featured including Clark’s Pies and samosas from Vegetarian Food studio. The market raised enough funds to hold a further market which is planned for 18 November 2017.

The market has been the culmination for months of work from Grangetown Community Action and Community Gateway, supported by more that 20 local volunteers, 11 student volunteers and 3 University staff volunteers. RCMA Markets, St Patrick’s Primary, Grangetown Hub and Grange Medical practice have all been key partners in ensuring the market day was a success.

Project Manager Rosie Cripps said, “this has been the result of the most amazing team effort from local residents and Cardiff Uni staff and students and local partners – I’m amazed by how well everyone has pulled together to get the market off the ground. It’s such a fun, positive project for Grangetown and the community here it’s a joy to be part of and the invitation is always open for more people to get involved.   We hope the market will take place seasonally and continue to showcase the very best of Grangetown and all the area has to offer.”
