Professor Gary Baxter is designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Head of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Gary Baxter, has been designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for attaining distinction in pharmacy.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is the dedicated professional body for pharmacists in Wales, England and Scotland. It has approximately 50,000 pharmacist members, with less than 500 Fellows.

Dr Dai John, Deputy Head of School and reader in Pharmacy Education and Practice, congratulated Professor Baxter on behalf of the School, noting "This is indeed worthy recognition for his achievements over the years." 

Professor Baxter originally qualified in pharmacy at the University of Nottingham (B.Pharm) and the Royal London Hospital (M.R.Pharm.S.). He undertook research training in experimental pharmacology (M.Sc., Ph.D.), and his Ph.D. was awarded for studies on modulation of ischaemia and reperfusion-induced arrhythmias in hypertrophied myocardium. He was awarded the higher doctorate (DSc) from his alma mater in 2008.

Professor Baxter was the recipient of the British Pharmacological Society's Bowman Prize in 1996 and the Naranjan Dhalla Prize of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences (2011). He was elected to Fellowships of the Institute of Biology, the British Pharmacological Society, the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology. From 2003 to 2009, he served as European Secretary of the International Society for Heart Research and also served on the council of the European Society of Cardiology's Working Group on the Cellular Biology of the Heart, 2004-2009. Professor Baxter was previously a member of the College of Experts for the Physiological Systems and Clinical Sciences panel of the Medical Research Council.
