A Welsh engineering company born out of Cardiff University's innovative microwave research has been bought by Montreal-based Focus Microwaves Inc.

Mesuro is a leader in developing radio frequency equipment and device measurement for the semiconductor industry.

Its acquisition by Focus Microwaves Inc, which manufactures microwave test equipment sold worldwide, will bring a range of sophisticated measurement and modelling products under the wing of the Quebec company.

Mesuro's technology has been developed as a result of over a decades' research at Cardiff University's renowned Institute of High Frequency and Communication Engineering, founded by Professor Paul Tasker in 1997.

The Institute has an international reputation in the fields of non-linear measurement systems, device characterization, and circuit design, and works with many leading companies in the RF communications field to address significant technical challenges through fundamental research.

Welcoming the acquisition, Dr Christos Tsironis, president and founder of Focus Microwaves, said: "We are delighted to have acquired MESURO, which will allow us to share in the same technology and product-development goals and the same desires to fully serve customers of both companies.

"As a result of the acquisition, all MESURO employees are now full colleagues of Focus employees. The combination of the two companies and their complementary technologies is expected to give rise to many new measurement, modelling, and optimization solutions using source/load-pull techniques and other advanced technologies."

Mesuro was created through the University's own proof of concept fund (the Cardiff Partnership Fund) which provided the initial investment to establish what eventually became a Fusion IP spinout with co-investment from Finance Wales and the ERA Foundation.
