A five-minute long composition, inspired by the excitement and mystery of Tarot Cards, has won the top prize at the RWCMD / Cory Competition Prize.

The composer of the piece, 22 year old Andy Wareham, is a recent graduate of the School of Music who is now studying a post-graduate course in Brass Band Conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

One of three shortlisted pieces, the piece was the unanimous, ‘clear winner’ choice of the jury. ‘Tarot! Tortuous Tarot!’ will now be recorded by the Cory Band for CD release and performed in upcoming concerts.

Of his win, Andy said: “It was a real privilege to hear a band as prestigious as the Cory Band play my music - to win the competition overall was a phenomenal experience!”

Andy is a published composer and has won a number of awards for his music including the Vivendi Composition Award and Best Student Composition at the 2016 University Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
