Cardiff joins Europe’s top 40 innovative universities

8 May 2017

Cardiff University has moved up nine places to 36th in Europe’s Top 100 Most Innovative Universities.

And the University has maintained its spot as 8th in the UK, according to Reuters’ second annual list.

The Reuters rankings identify the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and help drive the global economy.

The league table is based on data including academic papers, patent filings, industry citations and industry collaborations.

Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan, said: “Innovation is central to our strategy, as our £300m investment in our Innovation Campus testifies. We continue to build partnerships with industry, generate spin-outs, nurture academic enterprise and support student start-ups."

"We are the only Welsh university in the table, and compete well against the UK’s big technical institutions, ranking just two places behind Edinburgh.”

Recent data from the Higher Education-Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) Survey reinforces the Reuters findings.

Cardiff University has grown its collaborative research funding by £13.3m - the largest increase in the UK.

And Cardiff now ranks 2nd in the Russell Group for IP income – accounting for 98% of IP income among Welsh HEIs.

The Reuters 100 Most Innovative Universities list is dominated by technical universities and colleges.

Europe’s number one innovative university is KU Leuven, a Dutch-speaking university based in Belgium's Flanders region. It has a long-standing academic relationship with Cardiff. Both institutions work together to boost research income, create research collaborations and offer students and staff the chance to study and teach abroad.

Imperial College London is ranked 2nd in the table. Overall, some 17 UK institutions feature in the list, including Oxford and Cambridge.
