Rebecca Burgess an A-level student at Maesteg School who undertook a Nuffield sponsored research project over the summer with Prof Davies of the CCI, has been selected for the National Science + Engineering Competition finals. This fiercely competitive national competition recognises young people's achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Rebecca's project concerned the deposition of gold nanoparticles at graphite surfaces and explored the influence of surface treatments of carbon when it is used as a catalyst support for gold; the work has been submitted for publication in the Journal of Catalysis.

Finalists for the National Science + Engineering Competition are invited to showcase their work to thousands of people at The Big Bang Fair on 11-12 March 2015. Further details of the finals can be found at http://www.nsecuk.org/.
