Cub Scouts from 1st St Mellons enjoy an evening of neuroscience

A truly fantastic time was had by both parents and cub scouts of 1st St Mellons last week, seizing the opportunity to become budding neuroscientists for the evening.

Hosted by the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute (NMHRI), the cubs were put through their paces as they engaged with various fun activities all set to test the workings of their brains within different capacities.

We were honored to have a visit from BBC One's very own Dr. Rhys Jones who was also keen to show his enthusiasm of neuroscience, not only making great friends with the children but our resident university Guardian, 'Dylan the Dragon'.

All 35 cubs scouts were proudly awarded their 'New Hope from Neuroscience' activity badge at the end of the evening for being such budding scientists and even the parents said what a great time they all had.

A delighted Akela of 1st St Mellons Cub Scouts Tony Byrne later said;

I cannot express my thanks fully for all your hard work tonight, and your wonderful team. I have had emails and texts from parents expressing how much fun they had, let alone their youngsters.

You were all BRILLIANT!

We would also like to give a special thanks to all the support we received from GE, eppendorf, ThermoFisher Scientific, Promega and Starlab who kindly provided us with all the essentials such as lab coats and gloves and of course all the sweeties.

A special thank you also must go to our very own team of ambassadors here at the NMHRI who helped to supervise each activity and Emma Dalton - NMHRI Lab Manager, who organised the whole event.

The Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute are keen to hold a similar event next year. To express your interest please email: neurosciencecu@cardiff.ac.uk
