St David’s Day community event showcases Welsh culture and heritage

8 March 2017

Cardiff Business School held a St David’s Day celebration in its Postgraduate Teaching Centre on 1 March 2017.

The event, held as part of the School’s #givesomethingback charity campaign for Cancer Research UK, was an opportunity to celebrate Wales’ national day and showcase her language, culture and heritage.

Staff and students from across the School were invited to participate in a range of activities designed to inform and entertain.

The foyer of the Postgraduate Teaching Centre was filled with music as two harpists, including Business School staff member Emily Parfitt-Croyden, played several hymns and folk songs.

Cardiff University’s Welsh for All programme (delivered by the School of Welsh) ran a Welsh language taster session while Visit Wales provided a range of promotional materials on Wales and her many attractions. In addition, Cadw supplied the School with maps of South Wales which were available for students to take away, proving especially popular with international students.

Traditional Welsh foods such as Welsh cakes and bara brith, as well as bunches of daffodils were available for a small cost, and a quiz on Wales and Welsh culture was held. Prizes were kindly donated by a local supplier in Cwmbran.

Speaking at the event, Dr Jane Lynch, Director of Student Experience, said: “While this event was open to all staff and students, I hope it was particularly enjoyable and enlightening for our international community as an introduction to Wales’ history and traditions.

“We had a fantastic time and there was a real buzz around the building. The harpists proved particularly popular and it was great to see some of our students trying their hand at playing. I thank all of our contributors, and attendees, for making this another fantastic School community event.”
