The future of British housing

A leading University alumnus is in the running for a major UK architectural prize.

Welsh School of Architecture graduate and part-time lecturer, Ed Green has been shortlisted for the prestigious Sunday Times National Housing design competition.

Ed Green's unique S,M,L (Stacking/Modular/Lifetime) Home design allows a family home to be built in just one month, capable of responding to the changing needs of the people living inside – a home that can be made larger or smaller, or even moved from one location to another.

Ed Green said: "Is this the future of British Housing? Well, it's certainly a contender.

"The S,M,L Home is assembled in prefabricated units that are robust, hardwearing and affordable. Residents select the spaces they want in their home from an extensive catalogue.

"Materials and finishes are chosen to taste and are all full recyclable. Once the units are delivered to site, a home can be interconnected, weatherproofed and occupied in less than a month."

Pentan Partnership, a leading architectural firm based in Cardiff, is behind the design and is the only Welsh company to be shortlisted for a Sunday Times prestigious competition.

There are just six shortlisted from over 250 international entries. Ed's design is the only Welsh entry and is up against firms based in London, and Sweden.

The winning design will be selected by a public vote which closes on August 13th and will be built at the 2013 Ideal Home Show in Earls Court, London – then moved to the BRE Innovation Park to stand as a live example of how excellent design, sustainability and smart technologies can be integrated.
