Go Green

Two Cardiff students are urging the people of Cardiff to Go Green in October.

Philippa Reid and Siobhan McGovern have become 'Green Makers' for the charity Size of Wales and are helping raise awareness of its work and fundraising as part of Go Green day on 19th October 2012.

A student in the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics and a member of the Students' Union Fashion society, Philippa said: "On October 19th, along with other members of the Fashion Society, we will be hosting a Go Green Tea Party at Milgi Cafe on City Road. We are encouraging everyone from Cardiff to come along in their fashionable green outfits, enjoy tea and green-themed treats. We are hoping to raise money through our raffle and by selling wristbands and will have some collection boxes around the University buildings in Cardiff.

"In the weeks after Go Green Day we are hosting our own fashion show at the Students' Union, in aid of Size of Wales. We will be featuring both vintage and high street styles on the catwalk. As our own feature we are incorporating a line of our very own sustainable clothing, which we are fashioning ourselves out of recycled goods."

Size of Wales aims to help protect an area of tropical forest equivalent in area to Wales and, in turn, inspire other countries to do the same. The money raised by Cardiff will help fund a range of actions that will protect the rainforests and support the indigenous Wapichan people in Guyana to secure legal title to their customary forests and develop plans for conservation for a size of rainforest equivalent to the size of Cathays and Roath combined.

The Wapichan project was chosen as Forest Partner for the University by staff and students as part of the University's Sustainability Week in 2011. This year, Sustainability Week runs from 29th October – 2nd November and will include talks, exhibitions, workshops and more that the whole University can get involved with.
