Lecturers and students of modern foreign languages at Cardiff, Bangor, Aberystwyth and Swansea universities got together recently to find out more about studying languages through the medium of Welsh.
Held at the Urdd in Cardiff Bay and funded by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the events have given staff and students a useful insight into the career benefits and opportunities available to students of modern languages in Wales, and provided an opportunity to show the scope of Welsh medium modules now available.
Elliw Iwan, Branch Officer of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at Cardiff University who organised the event said: "A series of micro lectures delivered by academics from various universities across Wales highlighted the wide ranging modules available through the medium of Welsh. The micro lectures included themes ranging from simultaneous translation to European minority languages and the history of the European novel – there was something for everyone".
The event also included a linguistic quiz based on the gameshow Who wants to be a millionaire, and a challenging quiz on European Culture.
Elliw added: "Thanks to the Coleg Cymraeg for the opportunity to bring Welsh medium students and lecturers of modern languages together to enjoy a fun and interesting event. The icing on the cake was staging the course at the Urdd in Cardiff Bay, which offered superb facilities and an outstanding location. We're all eagerly awaiting the next course".
