East meets West

13 December 2012

The School of Music welcomed a group of talented Singaporean music students and their teachers recently. The students from Raffles Institution and Raffles Girls School were on a visit to Cardiff during their British tour.

The group was invited by Professor Kenneth Hamilton, who has a long-standing involvement with the Raffles Academy Programme for elite students in Singapore. Following a tour of Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay, the students visited the School of Music where they were greeted by the Head of School Professor David Wyn Jones.

The students participated in a piano and strings masterclass focusing on music by Beethoven and Granados with acclaimed performers Professor Hamilton and Professor Robin Stowell in the Concert Hall.

The University will be intensively involved with the music scene in Singapore next year. Professor Hamilton will be visiting in April, to give a piano recital of music by Chopin, Wagner, and Alkan at the Esplanade, Singapore's principal concert venue. He will also conduct further masterclasses with the Raffles students and Professor Stowell will be offering masterclasses in Singapore the following month.
